"There needs to be a lot more emphasis on what a child can do instead of what he cannot do."- Temple Grandin
I teach an 8:1:1 self-contained 3-5th grade class.
My students need this furniture to continue driving their instruction. Now that they have a variety of books that are on their independent and instructional reading levels readily available they need a space that provides a comfortable successful learning environment.
In addition, their variety of disabilities comes with a variety of behaviors. This area will provide a safe calming space.
My Project
The bean bags and carpet will create a welcoming and comfortable learning environment. When used for autistic children, beanbag chairs provide even pressure on the body providing a calming sense of security, and the beanbag will adapt to the child’s body as he or she grows.
Students will be able to choose where they want to sit.
They are very interested in our new leveled library. I want to continue their growing love for reading by creating a relaxing space. The carpet will give them an opportunity to sit on a soft comfy spot on the floor if they choose. The bean bag couch can be used for guided reading, peer reading, or leisure. The bean bag chair can be used in the library and all other areas of the classroom to help promote focus.
This space can also serve as a sensory area when they need a break or a quiet area.
