Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a speech pathologist and work solely with children that have special needs. My students primarily come from low-income households and families that are limited English proficient. The students don't have access to some of the outside benefits needed to keep the learning momentum and because of their specialized learning needs and limited home support, school can be overwhelming.
My students love to learn and light up when they realize that success is within their reach, despite the challenges they face.
My Project
Research has shown that students with sensory processing deficits will also struggle to learn language. The beanbag and soft seats I'm requesting give me the chance to offer a variety of seating choices. Choices empower children. Empowered children are motivated and ready to learn!
Language is the key to all learning and overall success!
However, my population is much more than just language impaired. My special needs students have many areas in their lives that require support and specialized instruction. By supporting my students' sensory processing needs, I will be able to not only meet their language needs, I will also address sensory needs and create a positive learning environment and make language learning fun!
Every single student I meet is worthy of a great learning experience and with this small but fundamental change, I will be giving them a better chance to succeed in their education.
