My students are all learning Spanish as a second language and are part of a cohort that have been together since at least kindergarten. Starting with their reading and literacy in Spanish through Math, Science, and Social Studies they are fully immersed in a language that will prepare them for our multi-lingual and multi-cultural future.
Second language immersion requires quality sheltered instruction as well as academic opportunities for peer-to-peer interaction for language input (listening and reading) and output (speaking and writing).
Standard desks in groups works for some lessons and projects, but flexibility is necessary to achieve further language development with 21st century skills and collaboration.
My Project
These pieces of furniture will help transform an aging classroom into a dynamic space to allow students to be in their best environment for different needs.
Different students have different needs for different lessons in different subjects in different parts of the day.
This furniture will allow students the flexibility to make their best choices in class. For some that will look like circling up in a math lesson for different abilities to team up and teach each other. In a reading lesson, it might mean finding a quieter, solitary place to dive into their newest book. A writer's workshop might allow a pair to team up and help revise each other's work.
This project is all about building toward options and flexibility to better serve each learner's best environment.
