My students need a more comfortable environment that helps them be their best learning selves with wobble chairs, pillows, soft seats, and knee mats. I want my classroom to become “ours” instead of “mine,” and give my students a sense of ownership over their learning.
Every year is a new beginning with new faces; all eager to learn. Each year there is more that is required from my students which involve longer attention span, fine motor skills and seated work. No matter the challenges I find that every year they face them ready to work! I incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, I would like to add alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are!
My Project
I have been a kindergarten teacher for 16 years, and I truly believe in the words of teacher-astronaut Christa McAuliffe: “I touch the future. I teach.” I get to touch our future every day, so when I learn about new practices that will benefit kids, I wholeheartedly jump in.
With classrooms changing I recently researched flexible seating.
I absolutely love the idea of creating, a more comfortable environment that helps students be their best learning selves. I did my research and looked at examples, including “Why the 21st Century Classroom May Remind You of Starbucks” by Kayla Delzer. Delzer’s words and other success stories of teachers around the country convinced me to go this route. My goal is for my classroom to look more like a coffee shop or a living room than a traditional classroom by using the wobble chairs, pillows, soft seats, and knee mats.
