My students need more options for flexible seating. According to their learner profiles, my students feel that with flexible seating options they will feel more focused and ready to learn.
I have an amazing group of students. I taught them last year in first grade and decided to loop up with them to second grade this year. They range from very struggling readers to extremely strong readers. However, they are very accepting of each other's differences. We truly have a strong sense of community within our room.
The first week of school, I did a learner profile for each student, asking them how they'd like to learn and what would they like to learn.
Out of 19 students 17 students said they felt they could learn better using some form of flexible seating. Over the summer I attempted to purchase a variety of seating options but it definitely can get very expensive. So I'm turning to DonorsChoose.org for help.
My students have voiced their needs and now it's time for us to make it happen! With your help my students will be able to better focus on learning!
My Project
Students are in school for 7-8 hours a day. They are expected to work and stay focused for longer than their bodies allow. With a flexible seating option, students are able to move and get out their wiggles while staying focused on their work. This movement also increases oxygen flow to the brain and their core strength. Flexible seating also allows students the choice of how they feel they will learn best that day. Having the freedom of choice gives students a voice they've not had before.
Students are also more comfortable throughout the day with flexible seating.
Instead of having to sit on those hard, plastic chairs all day, they can now have more comfort with balance ball seats. Let's not forget that children need a little fun in their lives and with flexible seating, in addition to staying focused on their learning for longer periods of time, they will also be having fun!
