My students are 3rd graders in an urban Oklahoma school. Many of them are English Language Learners, come from non-traditional home environments, and qualify for free lunch.
They are bright, creative, energetic, and full of possibilities.
Some of my students enter 3rd grade reading below grade level. We are also facing many challenges in education as a district and throughout our state. Despite these challenges, my students are resilient. They are eager to learn and especially to become better readers and mathematicians!
My students love our daily self-selected reading time. They come to school excited for this part of our learning day. With this project, I would like to provide additional individual book bins for my students to store their reading material. We have small desks and they often resort to keeping their books on top which gives them less space for working. I would also love to start Flashlight Fridays in my room as a way to celebrate reading. During reading time on these special days, students get to choose a comfy spot and use their flashlight to read. This is a fun way to get students excited about reading!
