My students need flashlights and scary stories for our Flashlight Fridays! We will turn the lights off to read in the dark once a week. Sometimes a little bit of fun can make the mundane unusual.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students may not have the supplies they need, but they have winning attitudes! My students come to school hungry and yet they work hard. They are struggling to learn English and yet they are brave enough to try to read new words.
For some of my students, school is the best part of their day.
I want to make sure that they can have what they need to learn as much as possible. It is a joy to see them exclaim in a surprised voice, "I did it!" Learning brings confidence and enables my youngsters to look to their future with hope.
My Project
If you can remember reading at night under the bedsheets with a flashlight, then you know just what I am going for! We will be starting Flashlight Fridays this year. Each week we will turn the lights off, stretch out on the floor, and read with our flashlights.
It is my hope that making this silent reading time special every week will encourage my students to look forward to reading.
All of the studies show that students need time in text to be better readers. We read every day and sometimes putting a little twist on an old favorite will make it seem exciting and new. I want my kiddos to get fired up for our reading time and these flashlights (and a few scary books just for good measure) will help.
