My students need a large varied collection of refreshed and newly published books in our classroom library chosen by them as well as mini flashlights. These are ingredients to growing and motivating lifelong readers.
My fourth graders are a diverse group of students. I have several special education students, as well as general education students. Some are working below grade, some are working on grade level and some are above grade level learners. No matter what level they are, they should all feel confident and excited and important every day.
My classroom is a place that is welcoming, where my students' imaginations grow wild and they are encouraged to reach their fullest potential on a daily basis.
As students enter my classroom, I want them to feel that they are in a fun, safe place to learn and to be able to take risks and feel empowered.
My Project
The resources from this project will help create a reading environment in our classroom where students can practice their independent reading with a wide variety of new books many chosen by them to fill our shelves. Dragonbreath and Diary of a Wimpy Kid continue to be frequent flyers off the shelves in my room. My students have been asking for more biographies in the Who Was series every day.
Research tells us that students in classrooms with well designed classroom libraries and great ideas to motivate them to read spend more time reading and exhibit higher levels of reading achievement.
These books chosen by them will help build a reading culture that fosters students who want to read more books at their interest level and at their own pace because they will not be due back to the library until they finish reading. The mini LED flashlights will help make independent reading special, something to look forward to...Flashlight Friday reading time after status of the class.
My students need to find their just right book so that their hearts and minds are begging for more!
