Help me give my students a set of these noun, verb, and adjective flashcards that use appropriate pictures for my mature high school students! These flashcards will help maintain the dignity of my students.
I teach in an urban high school with a very diverse population of 3000 students. My students come from all over the world. They are all English language learners, ranging in proficiency from first time English speakers to students with good social fluency but still struggling with their academic English.
My students range in age from 14-18 but have adult responsibilities weighing on their young shoulders and have already had experiences we can only imagine.
As COVID-19 began to take it's toll in Utah, many of my students' parents were laid off from their jobs. My students took on full-time work to support their families. For a while, many tried to continue their online school work while working a 40+ hour work week. A few succeeded in managing both but sadly, most could not manage the impossibility of such a schedule. In all this time, I have never heard a single complaint from any of my students.
Although their English proficiency did not progress during COVID, each one of my students has stepped up to help their families and has continued to do the very best they can. They are among the true heroes of this pandemic.
Over the course of the COVID months, my English language learners lost a significant amount of their new vocabulary. These high schoolers work so hard to express themselves as adults but it is a real struggle with so little vocabulary. When we returned to in-person instruction, I asked my students what they felt they needed the most. Every single student said, "more words!" They grasp new grammar concepts quickly but remembering useful vocabulary continues to be a challenge. I would like to use these flashcards in small groups for 15 minutes each day to quickly increase their vocabulary and fluency.
The beauty of these donated cards is related not only to the actual vocabulary, but also to the mature and diverse images that illustrate each word.
So many published flashcards are created for very young children. These cards I am requesting will provide the useful tools for my students to use in other classes and the real world while maintaining their precious dignity. I would be so grateful to be able to offer these cards to my brave and eager students.
