Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach fourth grade in a working class and immigrant neighborhood in Los Angeles. Many of my students are learning English as a second language, some of them have special needs, and all of them love to learn. Our Title I school is an important, safe haven for my kids, who are surrounded by poverty and gang activity.

Fourth grade is a fantastic year of learning. Math in particular is a subject where kids learn a lot--including long division, negative numbers, and factoring. What's the problem? My kids don't know their times tables! They learn their multiplication tables in third grade, but when fourth grade rolls around, they have forgotten much of it.

My students need their own flash cards! With a set of flash cards that they create, they will be able to practice their math skills. Then, when it comes time to do their division problems, they won't have to count on their fingers. The days of "drill and kill" are out, but kids LOVE to practice their math skills with flash cards and games. This is a great solution to the multiplication problem. And with thousands of flash cards available, we'll extend this fun learning to other academic areas.
