Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Teaching in the highest poverty area in New York State has its challenges. The children need to learn their addition and subtraction facts, by memory. Many still use their fingers, and counters and find it a challenge to memorize their facts. We have one set of flash cards.
The children are second graders, ages 6 & 7.
All children are on free lunch and come from the highest poverty area in New York and & 7th in the nation. Most of the children have no Internet, or cable at home. Many have witnessed violence. They want to learn and do well. They need to practice their math facts, using flash cards to help them learn by memory. They are motivated to learn. Having one set, only allows a few children to practice. Flash cards could be taken home for practice.Their homes do not contain pencils many times. They would love to use them to increase their speed. Having flash cards would give them something to do at home and give them a better chance to succeed in math, especially with multiplication coming. They could challenge themselves to do better. The children are starting life on an uneven learning curve and deserve the best. Their parents are struggling and would not be able to purchase the flash cards for the children. Please help.
My Project
The children could challenge themselves with the flash cards. They could race and see how many they get in a minute and compete with each others and themselves. They would use them during math, at centers and be able to check them out for use at home. They could play in twos and make math fun and challenging at the same time. Many have trouble visualizing math facts and this would help them. We would use them daily and they would use them on weekends. We could even challenge other classes. If they gain speed with addition and subtraction facts, it will aid them in newer math skills, multiplication and division. Basic math facts help insure good growth and gains in math and help them throughout life. The flash cards would help them in so many ways.
Donating the flash cards would increase the children in my class, and classes to come with their basic math facts.
We all need basic math to continue growing in math skills without the struggle to add and subtract. The children would do better on tests, do better in day to day life, know quickly when they are being cheated. Basic math facts are a stepping stone to life in math situations. The flash cards would increase their speed and help them later. They can be used for years to come.
