Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students represent a very diverse population. They consist of low income students as is evidenced by the fact that our entire school district receives free and reduced lunch based on the level of poverty. However, my students are the most wonderful people in the world. They represent the future of America in so many ways. Nearly half of our students are first generation immigrants from the Dominican Republic. So many of our students struggle to complete even the most basic assignments because they lack the supplies to do so. Therefore, I humbly request funds in order to purchase flash drives for our high school's writing lab. The fledgling writing lab is student-centered and provides computers and a printer for students to complete their assignments. However, many of our students have no way to finish their assignments at home. With these funds generously provided through this program, I would like to purchase flash drives so they can save the work they completed at school and complete it at the public library or at a friend's home. The vast majority of our students do not have access to a computer or any technology at all at home.
My Project
The students in our schools, most of whom are first generation immigrants, need a hand up in order to finish high school and in some cases attend college. Writing is a daunting task for most, but for those who lave limited English proficiency and live in poverty it can be intimidating to say the least. In the school's writing lab, students are able to start their papers and projects, but in many cases not finish them. With flash drives, the students can save their work and complete it at the public library or a friend's house. Not only will these flash drives improve their writing and their grades, but they will provide a sense of academic accomplishment and achievement for our students.
