My students are a wonderful microcosm of our community, representing a wide diversity of racial, ethnic, and language backgrounds. Half of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch - which means their families are living below the poverty level.
These amazing kids love to read and to listen to stories.
The library is a vibrant place where kids are able to find books that reflect their interests and tastes. During library visits students also have the opportunity to experience literacy and storytelling through Kamishibai theater, puppet shows, book videos, and audiobooks. This year I would like to add Flannel Board storytimes for K-2.
My Project
Reading aloud to children is one of the most effective ways to increase language development, get them ready to read and motivate them to become lifelong readers. In libraries, story times bring this needed literacy experience to children.
Flannel Board storytimes help to turn a visit to the library into “an event.” When I treat story-time as a special time to look forward to, my students will be just as excited about it as they are about other special school events.
They will think of reading as an exciting social activity. One of the key literacy skills is “print motivation” – if kids believe that they will find fun and excitement in stories, they will want to read books.
