Our 9th grade AVID students are incredible. They are diverse group of students, passionate about improving their community. This year, they chose to take on a community service project to make our school feel more inclusive to students of all nationalities and backgrounds. They want to hang flags around the hallways of our school to reflect every country our students and families come from.
First, they created and distributed a survey asking students, parents, and community members, so they could compile a list of the different countries that our community comes from. Our community comes from over 70 countries, ethnic groups, and indigenous nations!
They then sent letters to each embassy, asking if the consulate general or ambassador would be willing to donate a 3-by-5 feet flag of their country to hang in the hallways of our school. They wrote over 70 letters!
Our AVID students have received over 25 flags from their request letters so far, but due to financial limitations of many of the embassies, we are still in need of 46 country flags in order to have a flag that represents all of the diverse nationalities of our students and families.
During this project, students have had the opportunity to sharpen their skills through drafting, editing, and sending professional letters to consulates around the country. They have also been pushed to collaborate with each other, and collectively problem-solve solutions to problems as they arose. As their teacher, I was incredibly proud of them as they worked together to create polished survey and marketing campaign to ensure that they were able to collect information from students regarding their diverse nationalities.
In Their Own Words
Our 9th grade AVID students said:
"We are determined to make our community a better place. One of the things that makes our school such a great school is our diversity. We speak different languages, practice different religions, and come from so many different countries. We want every student and family to know they are welcome at RHS."
We have already put many hours into this project, and we need your help to complete it. We worked as an AVID family to create a survey for our school, and we created and edited a video commercial to encourage students to complete the survey. And we wrote letters to over 70 different embassies, asking them to donate a flag of their country to our school. (Our hands were tired!)
Once we receive all of the flags, we will work with our principal to hang them up in the hallways throughout our school, so that students get to see them every day when they walk to class.
Seeing the flags every day in our school will be a constant reminder to all of us (students and staff) that RHS is a diverse community, and that is awesome.
We talk about in AVID how we are one school and one community, and that is something we celebrate. And at the same time, every one of us is unique. We want our community to see both. That we have a million different identities that we are proud of, and at the same time we are all proud to be apart of #TeddyNation."
