As the physical education teacher, I have the privilege of getting to know each and every student that walks through our doors. The student population here at the WECEC is extremely diverse with different ethnicities, cultures, and socioeconomic statuses.
With all of those differences, each student still has a variety of things in common including the willingness to learn, to be educated, and a love for physical activity.
When the students enter the gymnasium, I try to make sure that each and every class is the best time of their lives, which will hopefully lead to a lifelong enjoyment of being physically, socially, and emotionally healthy. It doesn't take much though. Have you ever seen a child run? They are all smiles.
My Project
The second grade students have recess every day at WECEC. Their recess is about thirty minutes, which provides them with an opportunity to play with others and develop important life skills. Skills developed through play can include cooperation, communication, teamwork, and problem solving. The students at recess have access to the playground equipment and a few pieces of athletic equipment.
To increase the fitness and sport opportunities at recess the flag football belts, six footballs, and cones could be used by the students to play six flag football games at a time (6 four vs four games).
This would allow forty-eight students the ability to engage in a fun and competitive activity at recess. Increasing physical activity at recess can help prevent obesity, increase academic performance, increase self-esteem, and reduce behavior problems in the classroom. The students will receive instruction and playing time during physical education that will introduce the skills and rules for flag football. This will provide the students with the knowledge they need to be able to successfully play the game independently at recess.
