it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
College preparation is the name of the game in my classroom.
Teaching 9th grade students is an amazing challenge everyday--add in the subject of English and reading and it becomes even more essential to meet the challenge. Serving minority students at my charter school, where the focus is college readiness, means I need to provide every opportunity possible for the students to access the materials.
For the three years I have been teaching here, I have encountered students who do not read on grade level and who struggle reading independently. As in every classroom, I also have students who learn in many different ways. In order to make sure my students increase their reading levels and comprehend the text, I need to provide different resources so they can access the reading. Reading will be an essential skill for the rest of their lives--college and beyond.
The listening stations will provide a way for my students to access the reading. The students will be able to read along and annotate while they listen to the words being read correctly and fluently. They will be able to stop when needed and replay if something was misunderstood. This will be an invaluable resource, which will help to element the phrase "But I hate reading!" in my classes.
Your help will ensure that my students are continuously improving their reading comprehension and skills while on their way to and through college.
