My students need temperature, pH, pressure, and motion sensors so they can use them in real life lab applications and know that their readings are accurate.
A typical day consists of students getting out their lab notebooks, lab supplies, and investigating science concepts in as many hands on ways as possible and ending with discussions about what we learned. I notice that hands on science creates better scores and the students retain their knowledge.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds, races, and social economic statuses.
We have about half of our students in ranching and farming with the other half living in small towns. Many of them are on free and reduced lunch programs with quite a few of them being foster kids. Most of our students want to learn and get a good education so they can be wealthier than their parents and be able to have nice things. The students are known for hard work during hands-on learning activities and falling through the cracks in lecture only classes. Our school is quite small with an average of seventy-five total students in sixth through eighth grade. Many of our kids travel up to 40 miles a day just to get to school. Activities are important to us and we like to be in as many activities as possible. We have little funding and it is hard to buy or replace items that have gone bad.
The resources I am asking for are needed for inquiry based science that contain many labs. I feel students learn best when they can do hands on labs. Many of the labs I would like to do require the use of sensors that plug into a computer. The sensors ensure accuracy and allow for the students to look for patterns within their graphs and charts which lead to scientific knowledge. Students who use hand-held timers, thermometers, etc are more likely to make errors which may inhibit the person from seeing the pattern or relationship they are trying to achieve. Which then leads to problems when I ask them level 3 and 4 questions to push their knowledge further. Using inaccurate numbers make it difficult to design labs or simulations to solve a problem because the data won't lead them to the right conclusions. The students will be able to create solutions to problems and accurately test them and then extend their knowledge into other areas which can easily be tested with the sensors.
My classroom will improve because I can do more hands on labs with the correct equipment.
The patterns and concepts will be easier to see and obtain. Students will better understand science and will be more likely to try solving situations using the correct methods. My students would be able to do what the best schools are doing and would be problem solving daily which is a much needed skill in today's society. They would also be great critical thinkers who are ready for challenges.
