I have been teaching in our school for 15 years. I love my school community; students, families, coworkers, booster club, and administration. They give so much support to all the teachers. I am changing grade levels and teaching math to 5th and 6th graders. (My favorite subject!) 99% of these students are kids I already know and 50% of them have already been in a classroom with me as a second grade teacher.
I love these kids and know that most of my battles as a teacher have already been won when they come into my classroom, they want to be with me because I want to be with them.
When all the hard work is done, a place to relax and have a since of belonging. One of the ways I like to treat my students is with a place that feels and looks comfortable. A place that students want to be. A place to gather with friends and be a part of something bigger than themselves. That is what I am hoping for in the funding I will receive from you. Please help me accomplish this goal as I set out on this exciting adventure.
My Project
Our school building has been added onto several times since 1885. I am changing grade levels after 15 years of teaching at this particular school and moving to the oldest part of the building. Currently, the walls are pretty bare and the cabinets are very unappealing to look at, but very useful inside. The room is a vast long "bowling alley" as it has been called.
I want to create a space that is appealing, a place the students know is made for them.
Moving what I currently have is not going to make much impact on a space this large. I want to cover the cabinets with contact paper, as painting them is not an option. I can use the pretty paper as a background and turn the fronts into usable blackboard. The flip chairs would allow many students to sit comfortably in an area, when they are flipped out, 3 students can sit on one chair. My students love being in my classroom because I always create a space that is special. These items will help me do that. I work hard for my students and in turn, they always work hard for me.
