Help me give my students tools, such as reading games, puzzles and talking boards, to develop better fluency when decoding words in first and second grade level stories.
My students are a diverse group of excited individuals. Eighty percent of my students qualify for free or reduced price lunch and therefore attend a Title I school. Additionally, our school is an extremely diverse community of learners. The majority of my students come from a variety of backgrounds and speak a variety of languages. Many are newcomers to the country or refugees seeking asylum in America from their home country.
The students at my school are first and foremost learning how to harness leadership from within.
It is our hope that our students will walk away from their elementary education with a strong sense of purpose and a drive to accomplish that to which they put their mind.
Our students get excited for every learning opportunity they can harness. I am thrilled for an opportunity to provide them with materials that are instrument to their continued success!
My Project
This project is all about fluency. My students have set goals to become stronger readers. As such, we started discussing how good readers must practice decoding words to become a faster reader. The sight word flashcards and flip books will specifically address the needs of my students who are still struggling to identity high frequency words both in and out of context. The word family readers and Can Do Reading Games will help some of my students who are farther along the phonics spectrum, but who still need to practice their fluency.
One of the great things about these stations is that they help the kids with their independence.
Each of these stations will give students an opportunity to work on the skills necessary to improve their fluency without necessarily having to sit with the teacher.
