Five-Year-Old Friendly: Help Make Our Classroom Comfy, Cozy, & Self-Reliant!
Help me give my students book bins, floor seats, and books to have classroom materials and furniture that will foster independence, joy, and exploration when we return from remote learning.
My students are a diverse bunch of joyful, excited, inquisitive 5-6-year-olds who come from many different Chicago neighborhoods. They are eager to make friends, create art, learn to read and write, do math, sing songs, and play!
My Kindergartners are joyous creators, inventors, and problem-solvers who love to learn through play, exploration, and hands-on discovery.
They excel when given voice and choice in not only what they are learning, but how they are learning!
My luminous learners teach me new things about myself and about the world every single day. As Kindergarten is many students' first experience with full-day school, I think a Kindergarten teacher's most important job is to instill a love of learning and an excitement for coming to school in their students, setting them up for years of success in education to come.
My Project
I began my Kindergarten teaching experience last year covering a maternity leave, and joyously found out midyear that I would get to stay! That means this is my first year setting up my own classroom. I am hoping to restock our library with some very favorite Kindergarten books by Todd Parr and Mo Willems- books that my students LOVE and always ask to read over and over again. I would also like to add some new book bins to hold all the books in our classroom library! The bins that we currently have are thin plastic, and most are cracking and breaking. They are also so large that they are too heavy for the children to remove from the library by themselves. I want my students to be able to independently and confidently access any book in our classroom that sparks their interest, and some new book baskets would make that possible. Finally, some flexible seating options so that students don't have to only choose between sitting on their straight-back chairs or our hardwood floor would be amazing!
Help me make our classroom a warm, inviting place that fosters independence and student choice. I would like my students to be able to choose their own books and comfy spots around the room to work, encouraging them to make positive choices about how and where they will learn best.
A child's Kindergarten experience sets the tone and lays the groundwork for their entire educational experience in the years to come. While we aren't back in the classroom yet, please help me make sure my room is ready for that wonderful day when we are all together again. Thank you so much!
