My students need a tablet using a Wi-Fi connection.

Remember what it was like to play outside? Most of my students don't. My students see being outside as a process and not a destination. What seemed so natural to children of yesterday, is now a task.
While serving over 800 elementary school students in "Southern Fried" South Georgia is a blessing, I have seen my students change over the past few years.
Georgia is moving to fight childhood obesity, by requiring all students grades 1-12(in a physical education class) be tested using the FITNESSGRAM fitness assessment. This program allows for a qualified physical education teacher to test, record, and submit fitness information to our state as well as provide the same information to the parents of the students involved. Georgia ranks nearly last in childhood obesity rates and we must make every effort to correct this issue. The information provided by FITNESSGRAM will assist parents, and physicians to better determine a child current fitness level and prescribe a program to fight this widespread problem.
While serving students from diverse areas with a strong military presence, I see students come and go very often. FITNESSGRAM has developed a program that is web based to allow students information to be uploaded from a variety of technologies. With the current technology currently in use, teachers are required to manually record all of the data manually, then input the data from a different location after the test is complete. With a tablet using a WI-Fi connection, teacher can update student information as it happens in real time and provide feedback in a much faster manner. With my population and their transient nature, being able to update student profiles is a must.
Besides the state law, infusion of technology in the classroom, and all of the other decorations added, we must realize our future is in the hands of the students we teach.
Current and accurate health information is vital for everyone. The tablet I requested will allow students and parents access to important information about their child's current health and offer a resource to their health professionals as well. This may also be the only resource of this nature they ever receive.
