Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All of my students come from low-income households and the pandemic has disproportionately affected their families. Some students join the class from the backseats of their cars, outdoor tables, or noisy rooms shared with multiple siblings. But in spite of their living situations, they are eager to go to school. As early as an hour before school starts, I start getting email notifications from Zoom saying my students have entered my virtual waiting room. I log on and my screen immediately lights up with their bright smiling faces. This moment melts my heart and brightens up my day.
My students' genuine enthusiasm for learning is what fills me with the passion to be the best teacher.
They understand that a good education gives them hope for a better future. They are passionate, sincere, and striving learners. As we end our virtual class, each student smiles and waves until I click "End Meeting for All". I love my students!
My Project
"When are the schools opening up again?" "Can we go back to school soon?" My students frequently ask me these questions expecting to hear an answer. But, instead, I respond with a question. "What would you like to do on our first day back for in person instruction?" My entire class misses recess time playing basketball, catch, tag, and other outdoor games with friends. Currently, we have 20 minutes of recess built into our virtual instructional day. But, several students just sit in front of their screens the entire time.
In these recent times of living with COVID-19, the biggest obstacles that my students have reported is not the quality of online education, but the lack of resources to engage in the outdoor activities that they love.
Spending time outdoors is essential for a student's mental health, which also will translate to gains in their academic performance. I want to bring back outdoor play, physical fitness, and fun into the lives of my students by providing them the equipment they need. I envision recess to be a time spent playing games in the sun, laughing, and being joyful despite distance learning. When we return to school my students can continue these fun outdoor activities together.
