Students especially in our region of the United States face the challenge of childhood obesity. They need strategies and plans to help fight this epidemic.
I am on a middle school campus teaching 11-14 year-old.
These students are from diverse backgrounds with a large portion of our student population on free or reduce lunch. A large portion of our student population is over-weight. Our State of Louisiana ranks very high in the amount of over-weight adults that live in our region. I believe that if we get involve educating our young people about proper nutrition an exercise we shed light on an issue that seems to get swept under the rug.
My Project
Students respond positively to seeing results and marked improvement. They are motivated to work for results when they see results improving. Keeping a digital record of fitness progress is encouraging to the students and motivates them to work even harder. An ipad allows these students to input fitness result in real time and compare result of previous testing. I have been amazed at how hard these children work to bring their mile time down, only if it is by a few seconds, just so that they can put down a lower time. Having an ipad would allow students to input their information outside at the completion of their mile an other activities instead of waiting for teacher to input results and then compare them to previous results before getting feedback. Real time feedback is very important to this age group. It could mean the difference between a student giving maximum effort or just giving up all together.
This project is important because our region and state ranks really high in childhood obesity.
Motivating to students to choose positive lifestyle behaviors is imperative for this age group. When task are simplified they become more obtainable. Teaching students to set an achieve small goals, they reach the ultimate goal of living life at a healthy and productive weight. Technology enhances every experience so that is why we are asking for you to help our children by motivating them to succeed.
