Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a recently retired Marine. I teach Marine Corps Junior ROTC and gym here at Noble Street Charter High School. Noble Street has been very successful in its goal of educating low income students in a safe, disciplined environment. We believe it's crucial to a high school student's overall development to be as physically fit as possible. We require all students to pass a physical fitness test before being promoted to the next grade. One of the challenges for our gym classes and sports teams is that we have a very small amount of fitness equipment. Every time I visit another high school, I am astounded when I look in the weight rooms. Most of them are as good as or better than a large health club such as Gold's Gym. What little equipment we have is home gym quality, which does not stand up well to frequent use by the gym classes and sports teams. We have an adequate amount of dumbbells and a Smith machine (a bar attached to vertical rails). We also have a home bench press with an Olympic bar, two 44lb, two 33lb, two 22lb, and two 11lb plates. We do a very good job of "doing more with less" at Noble Street. We spend many gym classes running around a local park, playing dodge ball or basketball, and conducting "Boot Camp" style cross-training classes. The students love the fact that they are losing weight or feel themselves becoming stronger. It would be tremendously beneficial to be able to implement strength training utilizing health club quality fitness equipment. I only emphasize health club quality due to its durability. This donation would benefit approximately 300 of our 460 students.
