My Spanish and Pathways to Success students live in a diverse, rural community. Many are native/heritage Spanish speakers who are the first in their family to be on track to graduate from high school and succeed in college.
Many of my students go directly from school to part-time jobs to help their families - we need creative ways to help them stay physically active!
My students have amazing stories of overcoming obstacles and beating the odds, whether it be poverty, language barriers, or something else. I want to see them triumph in their language acquisition and scholarship success goals so they are able to give back to others in the future.
My Project
My students love staying active while learning. I have worked hard to create a classroom oasis that provides my students with a learning environment where they can be comfortable and be themselves. Many of my students don't have the opportunity to get in enough physical activity. My students work hard taking notes, collaborating on projects, and using their language skills. As I am simultaneously teaching students on Zoom and face-to-face, it is difficult to incorporate a lot of movement into daily lessons. In addition, I would benefit from being able to pedal and plan. This year has increased the amount of time I spend planning and preparing lessons to teach on dual platforms (face-to face & Zoom). I would love a way to be able to get in more physical activity while not having to cut back on work.
Having an adjustable recumbent bicycle desk available will help my students who learn best in an active environment.
This desk promotes the engagement of both the body and the mind. My students will have the option of pedaling and working! This will break the traditional mindset of studying and learning and will help make my classroom even more welcoming to a variety of students. By adding this desk as a flexible seating option, I will be able to offer my students another way to succeed as they study, learn, and collaborate.
