Help our students become fit! We're doing our part by implementing an after school wellness program focused on getting our students excited about health and fitness. With the use of the fitbit technology, we can bring the fitness home to them, and help turn fitness into a lifestyle!
Our High School is located in a rural area of West Virginia with roughly 900 students who attend grades 9-12.
Our state continues to rank as one of the states with the highest obesity rates in the nation. We have created an after school wellness program to help address this negative health statistic and improve the overall health of our students. The program is available to any student at the high school and many students are choosing to attend on a regular basis. These students are motivated to make changes in their health by participating in a variety of physical activities. Staff and community volunteers are helping by teaching and modeling life-long fitness strategies and recreational exercise routines.
My Project
The fitbit One is a clip on, wireless activity tracker that can provide instant feedback to the user. Individuals take up to 43% more steps when utilizing the fitbit. The inclusion of the fitbit One technology into our after school wellness program will allow students to track their steps, distance, calories burned, stairs climbed, and quality of sleep. The fitbit One can help motivate students to reach their fitness goals by bringing greater fitness into their life (24 hours a day). Students are also able to log activity levels, meals eaten, sleep patterns, record weight, heart rate, and blood pressure, and even glucose levels. Most importantly, the fitbit devices will be available to be loaned to our student body, with readily available staff to help teach them how to use it properly and for maximal benefit. We want them to learn how to use fitness technology available to them, so they can have confidence to continue to be healthy throughout their lifetime.
In a state where 67.4% of adults are considered overweight, it is vital that we provide our students with strategies and opportunities to become accountable for their own lifelong health.
We hope to make fitness an outlet for our students to improve their health, manage stress, and have fun. The donations made to our after school wellness program will directly help our students improve their health in a fun and exciting way!
