I am the new physical education teacher to over 400 students. These students come from a variety of economic backgrounds and are from various areas around Wilmington.
Our students not only vary in economic backgrounds but are ethnically diverse as well.
We also have a wide range of ages, as our school is K-8. As a physical education teacher, I often choose sports and games that appeal to a variety of cultures. I also enjoy teaching exercises that they will use as they get older and their bodies mature. When encouraging students to be physically active, it is important to do activities that are enjoyable. If students find the activities to be enjoyable, they are more likely to participate in these activities outside of school.
My Project
After finally being back in a rhythm after Hurricane Florence, my middle schoolers need fitness equipment. We are entering a new trimester and need a fresh start!
I hope to teach them about tracking steps with pedometers and using medicine balls/resistance bands to work on muscular strength and endurance.
Pedometers are a great way to promote daily movement and medicine balls/resistance bands are easy to use and accessible to students outside of PE.
These are skills that middle schoolers need to be lifelong movers. The goal of physical education is to educate students about the importance of movement and keeping it fun. My students would truly benefit from this new equipment.
