This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I service a middle school in Harlem NY that is in need of class room libraries. I have had the pleasure of working at this school for 18 years. I get joy out of seeing my middle school students light up when they are able to have access to science fiction novels. They are composed of predominately African American and Latino students; all of whom receive free or reduced lunch. They are hard workers who deserve to have a successful school year.
My Project
I am asking for various science fiction novels so that my students can have for independent reading time in my science classroom. My students have expressed the types of books that they like to read. Some of those novels include graphic novels to Rick Riordan novels.
I want my students to see that they can enjoy reading in any class.
I want them to be able to pick any book that they want and gain a love for reading while increasing their reading level. I would like to see my students meet the goal of reading 25 books for the school year. This grant will help towards that goal.
