These students come from many different backgrounds. Some of these athletes have a pretty vast knowledge of fishing, while others may have never fished before, and want to just learn more about this lifelong activity/sport. Some of our students struggle financially, and can't always afford the proper equipment that is needed to become a better angler.
Many of the students who join the fishing team are the non-traditional athletes who don't always get to show their abilities during high school.
Many of these students have never been a part of a team before, and since everyone who wants to join the team is allowed to. There are no tryouts or cuts, and we encourage the students who are not the greatest anglers to join and learn as much as possible to increase their skills.
My Project
Since this is a new club, we are starting from basically ground up. We will use this money to purchase gear that the kids will be able to use while they are in the club. We do fun fishing outings, but we also compete in the Illinois High School Association fishing competitions. These competitions mandate certain equipment that the team must have and use during the competition. Most fishing equipment is rather costly, and when trying to outfit a team with as much gear as possible, this can add up really fast. As a team we already have a high running cost to participate in these competitions, so we don't always have enough money left over for other things.
Many of the items we need are basic things that will help us compete, and allow us to purchase more gear for the kids to use.
It will also allow us to spend what little money we do have on the entry fees to tournaments, allowing more club members the opportunity to participate. These resources are not only safety items, but they are items that students might not be able to afford themselves and would be able to use them during our outings to help catch fish.
