My students need to learn how to care for a pet. By providing a classroom fish Aquarium Kit and cleaning tools they learn how to feed it and care for the environment. It also provides comfort for some students.
I have 22 students from mixed socioeconomic backgrounds. Our community is located in rural Montana. The school serves all 5th and 6th grade students in our community. We have approximately 90 students in each grade level.
I have a great group of 5th graders.
They come to school ready to learn. I love it when they say "Wow" the day just goes so fast! That's the best compliment a teacher can get!
Creating a welcoming and safe environment is top on my list. They can't learn if they don't feel like they belong.
My room is a basic classroom with areas used for different activities. We have a reading corner, a game area, a cooperative learning area and I am hoping to incorporate some flexible seating. My students have come from 4th-grade classrooms that have just converted to flexible seating last year. This year each student has a desk where they can store their belongings.
I would love to get help as I continue to create the environment that will help my students thrive.
My Project
Our classroom has a pet fish! I am amazed each year how students flock to see Bubbles the fish. They bring in their peers and siblings to see the black fish with googly eyes. But our fish needs a new home. The tank is cracking around the plastic edges and the light hood no longer works. I would like to get a new 10 gallon tank with a lighted hood. I would also appreciate some balls for flexible seating. I can store them under the table when not in use.
The children love to sit and watch the fish, especially when they need a little quiet time.
I see children stopping at the fish tank daily, but it also offers a place where a child can sit quietly to reflect.
Our fish offers opportunities for students to learn about aquatic care and the environment. Students volunteer to help with the cleaning and maintanence of the fish tank and feeding the fish.
Please help us get a new home for Bubbles and some comfy seats to continue to learn in a comfortable environment.
