My students need these books for our first whole class read aloud. I selected Fish in a Tree because it is a heartwarming and humorous realistic fiction that teaches tolerance in a real and engaging way.
I teach fifth grade literacy, and character development to a Gifted and Talented class as well as a General Education class in the NYC Department of Education. This class has students with special needs and is diverse in ethnicities and gender.
My school promotes character development and encourages accountability, courage, and excellence.
I am just beginning with this new group in September of 2018 and would like to start off with an inspirational bang! Tolerance is the key to respect and success!
My Project
The students in my class are starting their first year with me, but their last year in elementary school before they embark on the rest of their young adult journey. I believe the novel Fish in a Tree will help them rekindle or spark their love of literacy while also teaching tolerance in an engaging and humorous way.
Character development is a huge part of my educational philosophy and is woven into each and every lesson I teach.
This novel will make the lessons so much more organic and tangible! Having their own copies are vital! They will be able to use their own copies to take notes, complete assignments, and participate in literacy circles and the Socractic Seminar.
