My students need books from the "Larry Gets Lost" series to help them with their beginning map skills. These books will be a FUN way to introduce them to the world around them.
My first grade class is a group of twenty-three energetic children who love to learn all that they can, whenever and wherever they can. My students are highly inquisitive and eager to learn each and everyday. They love coming to school and stepping into the world of learning where they get to "be all they can be" and strengthen their love of learning through literacy, math, science, social studies, technology, agriculture and much more. We are a Title One school in a small, rural community, with a very high poverty rate; even so, our staff and families want the very best for our students and strive to give them the very best education that we can. Ours is a tight-knit community with a consistent level of parent and community involvement.
My Project
In First Grade, we slowly begin learning about the world around us. We learn that we are part of a much bigger "picture", as we learn about our school, our community, our towns, our state, our country, our continent and our planet. We get really excited about the GREAT BIG WORLD around us, as we talk about places we have been and places we want to go. This can be a hard concept to grasp for many students, simply because they have not had the opportunity to travel outside of their state or even, outside of their local community. John Skewes's geographical series, "Larry Gets Lost", are children's books written about a dog named "Larry", who visits many large cities and states in the United States of America and famous, historic landmarks within those cities and states. He is a character that my students can easily relate to and that they can have FUN while learning new places and facts. "Larry Gets Lost in Washington, D.C." and "Larry Gets Lost in New York City" are just a few of the selected titles in this book series. These books will help us master some of our social studies skills ( country and continent for geography, landmarks for history ), while allowing us to learn in a FUN and hands-on way.
