My Students
My first grade students come to school at a variety of learning levels. They are enthusiastic to explore their world and I am excited to ignite their passion for reading, writing, and literacy!
Families in my community are diverse, students come from two working parent families, single-parent homes, or military/deployed parent houses.
Despite our limited space, families in our district opt to enroll, choice into our school, despite not living in the community specifically. I am excited to embrace all students, build relationships with them, and set high expectations for their reading and writing growth!
My Project
A superb mentor text allows students to identify how an author and illustrator use rich language and captivating images to make a book come alive. For 1st graders, having quality literature is essential for building a solid foundation for both writing and reading skills.
These books are exemplar texts, models of what my students need to deepen, develop, and identify themselves as authors and illustrators.
I firmly believe students need to see themselves as readers and writers! Quality mentor texts, like these, allow students to dig deep into the book, developing skills like questioning, retell, prediction, understanding characters, locating story elements, and ordering the story's events.
Once these skills can be identified in reading, the children excel at comprehending texts and in turn want to write their own books!
