Kindergarten students are imaginative, investigative, and at times rambunctious. Their love and desire for learning is transparent. As a first-year teacher beginning in the middle of the year, I will be learning alongside them, soaking in all of the joys of being a kindergarten teacher.
I have a classroom of 16 kindergarten students at a school located in an urban area.
The children have come to me from 5 different kindergarten classes that had been overcrowded throughout the year. As such, we are all new to each other. We were placed in a classroom that had not been used all year, and therefore had nothing in it.
My Project
My students sit on the floor every day for group instruction. The carpet will serve two purposes: comfort and space. For obvious reasons, sitting on a carpet on the floor is significantly more comfortable. Additionally, since kindergartners are still exploring their environments, it is crucial that during instructional time they have a designated spot to call their own. Math manipulatives, like the counters, will help my students gain number sense and have a visual when adding and subtracting numbers. The scientific materials are not something provided by the district, as their main focus is on reading and math. All children need to explore the world around them and begin making sense of it. The flip-book, magazines, and planters will help facilitate this learning in my students.
Any donations to help us purchase a carpet, math manipulatives, and science resources for our classroom would be greatly appreciated.
With these materials, my students will be comfortable in the classroom, have the tools to help them conceptualize numbers, and be free to explore the world around them through hands-on interactions.
