This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Students in the area of Michigan where I teach face many challenges outside of the classroom including poverty and violence. I want my class to be a "worry free zone" and my rug will provide a safe, comfortable area for my students to sit and to do a variety of activities.
My students will be starting 2nd grade this year and are in a extremely high poverty, low income area of Michigan.
They attend a school which is a member of the Educational Achievement Authority (EAA), which is a state mandated program for the lowest performing schools in the state. I know that they will be highly intelligent, full of energy, and ready to learn.
My Project
I'm asking for a classroom rug, which will be multi colored and will have space for at least 30 students. This rug will provide a comfortable, colorful environment for students to read and to attend daily class meetings, among a variety of other group and individual activities. My classroom operates under the Student Centered Learning model, where students will be taking ownership of their own education and this lovely rug.
My project is extremely important!
As a first year teacher, it is very important to have a very warm, loving classroom culture. This rug will play a key role in that culture from day one.
