My students need a classroom library that consists of high-interest literature to accommodate their varying reading abilities, along with comfortable areas, including ball chairs and floor pillows, in the classroom where they can dive into new novels.
I am a brand new teacher and just landed my dream job teaching 3rd grade at a school that strongly values developing lifelong learners. Something I love about teaching 3rd grade is watching the children as they start growing independence and taking responsibility for their own learning. Third graders are enthusiastic about school, avid readers, and have huge imaginations! At this age, my students are developing their own outlook on life and can absorb new information like a sponge.
As a new teacher, I am given a starter-kit of classroom materials, but anything more I feel is necessary for my students comes out of pocket.
While earning my elementary education degree, I gradually began to stock up on classroom materials, but still could use so many items to make my classroom community of learners successful.
My Project
In 3rd grade, children make the remarkable transition from learning to read to reading to learn. I want to provide my students with an abundance of books in our classroom library to increase literacy. Students at this age read several books a week, so it would resourceful to have a variety of high-interest books available on demand. Popular book series such as "I Survived", "Diary of a Wimpy Kid", "Magic Treehouse”, "Amelia Bedelia", "Wayside Stories", etc., will help to achieve this goal! This variety of chapter book collections will help to ignite an excitement in my students to read as many books as possible!
Giving my students a choice to learn in a way that's best suited for themselves has a direct impact on their engagement and motivation every day.
I hope to create a classroom atmosphere that gives students a choice in their learning and a sense of empowerment in our classroom. Flexible seating options allow students to work both independently and collaboratively in a comfortable, stress-free environment. I plan to furnish my classroom with exercise balls, stools, lap desks, floor pillows, etc. to create this inviting classroom setting.
