Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My student-athletes are high school students, coming from diverse backgrounds with over 89% of our students receiving free lunch. These athletes are hard working and highly motivated. We are a high needs, high poverty population with an enthusiasm for life that finds lacrosse serving as the gateway to express their creativity and abilities.
In our first year with a lacrosse program, our athletes have developed a passion for the game in such a short period of time.
A lot of our athletes play other sports, but love the camaraderie, up and down play, and physicality that comes with lacrosse. Through our season, we are truly becoming a team. We are hoping to continue to grow as players and as people by creating a life-changing experience with our first ever lacrosse program. I am hopeful to inspire students at all grade levels to develop attributes of teamwork, sportsmanship, and grit.
My Project
As the sport of lacrosse continues to grow exponentially in both the United States and in the world, it is unfortunate that urban inner cities do not get the same exposure to the sport. This is due to various reasons, including a lack of access to the equipment needed to play, lack of a youth or high school program, as well as economic backgrounds. Unlike the sport of basketball, lacrosse requires a lot of protective equipment, helmets, nets, lacrosse balls and a full field. This makes it challenging economically, as well as socially. It is hard to get friends together to play a pick up lacrosse game.
Our students athletes need 2 transportable nets for easy access to any field, lacrosse balls and a backstop to increase repetitions, and water bottles to stay hydrated.
This equipment will help our team tremendously. With our nets, we will be able to hold practice even when our game field is not available. With the extra balls and backstop, our team will be able to get double or even triple the amount of time spent on shooting and game-like scenarios. And finally, our players will be able be at their best with some water bottles to help us stay hydrated.
