Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We have students with various abilities. The students, parents, staff have all been working together to provide more for our students with severe disabilities to show off their abilities. Equipment required to allow our student's show off their abilities is expensive. The school continues to add new items each year to assist our students. This project will allow us to provide more items to assist these students to shine by showing off their strengths. These students are delayed in their receptive and/or expressive language skills. Many of the students have limited experiences and do not know what items are named even if they have seen them before. This community is still recovering from Hurricane Harvey. Many families are still living in homes that have not been fully repaired. School is their happy time because we are able to provide them with what they are not able to get at home currently due to their situations. The entire School community beams when we figure out a new ability for a student.
My Project
All of the remote-controlled toys can be programmed into a student's speech generating device and controlled through their eye movements. All of the switch adapted toys allow the students to control them with a touch switch. The home kit will allow the students to control items such as lights, fans, radios, etc.
These students will be able to be independent in controlling toys and other environmental items such as lights, fans, radios, etc.
How exciting for the parents and students to be able to be independent for the first time! Many tears of joy are shed the first time parents see their children enjoying themselves and participating in activities they never thought they would see.
