I teach middle school Science to 115 amazing students on an Indian reservation. Though they are avid learners. They live in communities where they do not have the resources to come prepared to class. I love how excited my students get for different parts of the curriculum. Some love the videos, some love the case studies, but ALL of them love the hands-on labs. Each of them holds compassion, creativity, and resilience in their being. My students are creative, compassionate and love to ask questions.
Also with our school district, there is a high turnover rate within the system and within this change of hands, the line-item budget for science lab consumables was omitted.
My Project
I have been working my best to provide what labs I can from past years left over’s and out of my own pocket. In losing our funds for this part of my curriculum, it also means we will not be able to have a science fair this year. This has been the icing on the cake for our year's learning and something that has been a student favorite. Many students were upset at this but then in turn asked if we could do dissections instead. So that is my mission, to obtain some specimens for each of my students to experience dissection, which is something we have not been able to do in the 4 years I have been in the district.
My students have all gone through different journeys and I use a variety of different teaching methods and strategies to serve them.
My students are curious, kinesthetic, engaged, and real life learners. Though my students are avid learners our community and school does not have the resources to keep up with their learning needs. My students are constantly persevering through adversity deserve to experience experiments they can relate to and will carry throughout life. In my classroom we honor their journeys and their culture through the classroom practices and the discussions we have. We talk a lot of things from our every lives and experiences that relate back to science to make it more purposeful! In gaining more than just the specimens themselves but the trays and kits, this will be a much more obtainable lab for years to come.
