One of the joys of teaching at a large school is watching previously lonely students find their tribe. You play anime themes on ukulele? We've already got a club for that! And our FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) robotics team reflects that inclusiveness and acceptance. We have young men who stir up team spirit by dressing in costume and young women who get their hands dirty by troubleshooting mechanical problems. At our school, it is talent and drive that matter, not anyone's assumptions.
Our students are fiercely proud of our high school because we cater to both the gifts and needs of every single student.
And that is why FRC Team 4533 welcomes everyone. We have team members from all grades and all levels of academic achievement. We have young men, women, and transgender students. Our students are proud of their European, Asian, African, and North and South American heritages. Some know how to weld; some have never driven a nail. Some don't even attend our school; they are homeschooled kids! The only thing they have in common is something you cannot see--a work ethic second to none.
My Project
A huge part of being a First Robotics team is the image that surrounds each team. Wando Advanced Robotics strives to build a brand that reflects integrity, cooperation, creativity, and persistence. And by creating a cohesive brand for our team, through buttons, trinkets, robot design, etc., we have won awards for imagery, design, and quality.
At every competition we create and spread our brand using the materials that we have available to us.
But to do so we need the raw materials so our students can let their imagination loose. We need everything from the humble Liqui-Mark markers to the slightly more advanced Surebonder glue gun (which can be plugged into a USB port) to the cutting edge XYZPrinting 3D printer. These art supplies and technological equipment will allow us to take our creativity and our image to the next level.
