Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My mornings are quiet and my students are attentive. As my classes arrive, each student retrieves their notebook and begins the warm-up exercise. I have three classes, two in the morning and one in the afternoon. The afternoon class has just returned from lunch and is a little more rambunctious.
My students are mostly children of immigrants.
They come from Mexico, Central and South American, Africa, and parts of Asia. Some speak English well but for most English is a second language. I teach sixth grade math. This grade is a transitional year for students in general. For my students this transition can be difficult largely due to the culture shock and lack of parental involvement. Immigrant parents work odd hours and sometimes more than one job so they are sometimes unable to be a good support. Thus, behavior is a problem for some.
This is actually the best school that I have worked in during my tenure! I have always worked with inner city youth but this by far is my favorite. My school has a warm and intelligent staff that have come together to create a bond with one another and their students.
My Project
In education we want students to experience a rich learning experience using tools that engage students, challenge their creativity, and enhance their knowledge and understanding across the curriculum. By adding LEGO Education resources to the Jane Long Middle School program, students will discover information through active, inquiry-based learning activities. Students who will participate in the program come from various economic and cultural backgrounds. The LEGO MINDSTORMS Education NXT Base Set and Software includes components to create movable robotic creations. These robots can be programmed to distinguish different colors, sense sounds, and respond to touch with the components included in the base kit. The LEGO Education WeDo Robotics Construction Set, Software, and Activity Pack will introduce young students to robotics. Students build models with LEGOs which feature working motors and sensors then use the robot to successfully develop a solution to a scientific problem.
Overall the LEGO math enrichment project is designed to engage students in math and technology using an innovative, inquiry-based approach.
It is our hope in using this material that we will develop creative problem solvers who are interested in pursuing further growth in math, technology, and science. LEGOs teach spatial relationships, geometry, logic, computer programming, functions, engineering, science, and principles of electricity.
