I teach first graders in an urban setting. My class is very diverse. Many of my students receive free and reduced lunch. The children begin first grade at age 5 or 6.

When my first graders enter in the fall we begin writing from the start during daily writing. The children are asked to write about their lives. They are often given a topic. At this age one of the biggest challenges for students during writing is penmanship. They have such a hard time knowing how to form the letters. They also have to think about spaces and grammar....and let's not forget about story content. It is such a challenge for them.

I found the answer to one of the biggest challenges the children face, penmanship. Smart Start Writing Paper has bold graphics, in Blue, Green and Red that promote the feeling of success as children simply 'Start at the Sky and pull down to the ground', while they write the words to their story.
