I love teaching first grade at a school in rural Maine serving students in grades prekindergarten through fifth. A very high percentage of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Many students are able to have enough to eat, in order to be ready to learn, thanks to a local group that sends home bags of healthy food each week. I have been teaching in this district for 33 years, and it is my home away from home!
My students are from a wide variety of backgrounds and each one of them is a valued member of our classroom family!
I am constantly thinking of new ways to motivate them to want to be successful learners and to reach for the stars!
My Project
Our school is closed for the remainder of the school year. While we are doing our best to teach them "remotely," and have provided access to online reading resources, first graders need real books to continue making progress and be invested in learning to read. I want to foster their love of books and motivate them to keep reading at home!
Receiving two to three books at their independent reading level, in the mail from their teacher, while schools are closed will make them feel connected and keep them reading!
