My students come to school every day full of life, and ready to learn. I ask them, "What can we do in 1st grade?" and they reply, "Hard things!" I want them to know I believe in them and they can do anything.
Our school school is a Title I school where we run a backpack program which allows students to have food on the weekend.
Despite so many difficulties in their home lives, my students continue to astound me with their invincible grit and unending willingness to learn and do their best.
My Project
How students learn to learn can build essential skills for life beyond the classroom. Classroom environments should encourage open communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity. This simply cannot be done when kids are sitting in rows of desks all day. For a lot of our students, learning can be a difficult task when asked to sit still in a chair for extended periods of time. My goal is to design learning spaces that increase levels of engagement, foster active learning, and support the learning goals of primary education. I intend to implement a flexible seating design within my classroom, which will allow students to learn in ways best suited for their individual needs. There will be 6 yoga meditation cushions will accommodate students who work better while seated on the floor at a low table, along with 6 Gaiam Kids Stay-N-Play Balance Balls will accommodate students who require more movement while they learn. Being given the opportunity to choose which learning space that work best for them will empower my students to become more self-aware and increase student engagement.
