My students need fun ways to engage in basic arithmetic, such as learning centers, dominoes, and counting games so they can develop fluency with fact families.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Perfect practice makes perfect! My students are developing fluency with fact families, and need more ways to do this than pencil to paper worksheets. Interacting with numbers on a kinesthetic level increases understanding to a higher degree!
My students are smart, caring, excited children of low socio-economic status in Washington, DC.
They love learning, especially if they can do it hands-on! These kids are practicing their addition and subtraction facts every day, and will become more automatic with their arithmetic knowledge and mental math abilities. My students are about 70% English Language Learners, and 100% wonderful.
My Project
My students spend equal amounts of time in large group learning, small group learning, and individual practice. These new centers and manipulatives will give them an exciting way to practice (and experience!) arithmetic while I work with other students. Not only will they be developing strong mathematical skills, they also develop a sense of independence in working and learning on one's own.
Solid background in arithmetic and mental math increases achievement in math when students are older.
The more these kids practice accurate mathematics and see solid evidence of how numbers work, the more successful they will be in the future! The earlier students think math is fun and not scary, the better chance they have of being confident in math for the rest of their lives.
