Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom has a variety of students that are from a low socioeconomic area. My students are really motivated by hands on activities. Currently, we have excellent hands-on resources for our ELA and Math curriculum.
However, what we have for our Science curriculum is completely outdated because it is not aligned with the new NGSS standards and most of the old kits that we do have are missing pieces or completely empty.
Our school provides a positive environment for all our students. Despite facing many challenges at home, my students bring positive attitudes and enthusiasm to the classroom everyday. I want to support their enthusiasm of learning by giving them more time with hands on activities, especially in the area of STEM.
My Project
I am an NGSS lead teacher for the Hawthorne School District and it would be awesome to have a fully stocked STEM mobile station to use with my students. Currently, there is no new curriculum or materials to use to teach the new NGSS standards.
My students love hands-on science activities, and I want to provide them with as many opportunities as possible to keep their love of Science blooming.
The mobile STEM station and flex space comfy floor seats will give my students numerous opportunities to be engaged in STEM activities from their desks or any other place they feel comfortable.
In the new NGSS Standards, there are Science and Engineering practices. One of the Science and Engineering practices is constructing explanations and designing solutions. I would use the mobile blocks from the STEM station to have students come up with structures that are stable and explain why they think they will be stable. With the mobile STEM blocks, students could test out their designs to see if they were correct and if they are not, then they would be able to come up with a new design. If students are correct, they can explain why their design worked.
