First grade galore! These munchkins at this age are one of the best ages to teach. They are curious, hard-working, and always up for a good challenge or exploration.
Better yet, creativity is the best part about this age, and differentiation sometimes takes a lot of creativity!
Because I am in an integrated co-teaching environment, some of my students in first grade also have Individualized Education Plans based on their special needs such as Speech and Language Impairment or Occupational Therapy. Most families here are low-income and students eat free or reduced-priced breakfast and lunch. Everyone is hard working and incredibly sweet!
My Project
After learning about a match offer on the VersaTiles kits through DonorsChoose, I decided to research on this product and found it very appropriate for my first graders. One particular goal about this age is getting students to become independent and aware of monitoring themselves as they read, write, and do daily tasks. In the area of literacy particularly, students become needy when it comes to checking for spelling or appealing for clues on decoding a difficult word. I love the idea that this kit allows students to self-check at the end of answering 12 questions about a specific topic: comprehension, vocabulary, decoding, etc.
I envision using parts of this kit as different literacy centers that students can focus on independently or in partnerships to keep each other accountable.
For example, if a small group is great at decoding but needs more understanding and use of vocabulary, they can have their own pages to work on in the answer pads. Then they can check the answer keys provided in the form of a puzzle on their pads. Not only is learning disguised as they think about answers and flip through tiles, but we are promoting independence as well to check their own answers and as a fun literacy center to look forward to!
As an educator, I am always ecstatic to try these new products as our generations are advancing faster than ever in technology and various ways of learning! Thank you in advance for supporting my classroom!
