Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you have a love of reading? Do you dive so deep into a book that you just don't want to put it down? Imagine of how wonderful it would be to provide that love of reading from the very beginning. You can provide that for my ambitious group of first graders.
The ability to read is the most important skill a child will gain in first grade.
In order to be proficient in any subject, you must be able to read. My first graders have an excitement towards reading and a passion for learning. We are a school with a student population of over 70% that are economically disadvantaged. A large amount of our students go home to tough situations, but you would never know by looking at them. They may not have had breakfast that morning, but come in with a smile and are ready to learn everyday. My students are unstoppable. They have inspired me to get more engaging and hands-on materials to support their drive and sustain their efforts in learning.
My Project
The LeapPads, eBooks, and learning games that I have requested will be used in small group settings. My students are often more technologically savvy than I am. They crave engaging technology and thrive when presented with the opportunity to use it. Stations/centers are an integral part of our daily routine. Our classroom stations support independent and self-directed learning. They allow my students to dive deeper into subject matter and explore topics they are interested in. Reading books is fun, but they jump at the chance to use any type of technology. Having LeapPads will provide the chance to combine both reading and technology. It will expand their love of reading and also their love of school.
When a child learns to read and begins to enjoy reading, the benefits are immeasurable.
Reading is such an important part of our everyday lives. Helping a child to start out with a great attitude towards reading will set him or her up for a lifetime of success. It is extremely important for students to see reading and learning as an enjoyable thing. A LeapPad will engage a child in a way that no teacher can. A love for reading and learning is forever priceless.
