Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

First grade students love to read science books! They love to read anything that is about the real world. Unfortunately, most children's science books are too hard for first grade beginning readers. I am asking for some science books that would be appropriate and interesting for beginning readers. I teach in Richmond, California. My students come from diverse ethnic backgrounds, mostly lower socio-economic status. Our class can only afford to go on one field trip a year, and for many students that is their only trip to explore science. This year we went to the Exploratorium in San Francisco and they loved it! I would like to bring real life science to them through these books. They would be able to learn and read about the real world, even if they can't experience it. These books would be used in two ways. First they would be available for students to read and respond to on their own. Secondly, students would use the books in groups to do research projects. They would pick a topic and work together to read the information, process it, and compile a report or presentation to our class. That is why I am asking for multiple sets of some of the books. These books would be well used and loved by my students. I know they love to hear about science when I read books to them, I think they would feel empowered to be able to read books like that by themselves or with their peers.
