My students live in a rural community with a population of around 1,000. They are very eager to learn and fostering that love of learning, and watching them succeed is incredibly rewarding. I feel very blessed to be their teacher and want them to have everything they need to do that.
I want their educational years to be engaging and purposeful....and I want them to enjoy that process!
Our community is very supportive of our school district and want our children to succeed in school and in life. For that, we are so thankful.
My Project
We recently purchased a new writing curriculum to help our students be better writers. We needed something to be able to help them write beyond their "comfort zone" (i.e. "I like pickles. I like hot dogs." or "I have a dog.") They can do so much more!! So after hours of searching, we found one! However, we need mentor texts to help make this curriculum a success for our students! Mentor texts are books that are used to teach a particular skill. For example, select a book that hooks readers from the first sentence to help teach your students to write a great introduction. Got a kiddo whose story details seem "safe" and not very interesting? Read them a book that has colorful language, amazing word choice, and vivid details. Those are mentor texts! We were recently funded for Part 1 of this project, which was the first 4 units, and let me tell you that these kids are LOVING writing time! We've completed and published stories from the first unit and the growth and potential we saw was AWESOME! We are extremely excited to continue this momentum!
I want our students to have access to great books and I want them to realize that they can write like the authors of those great books!
Our school district is very small, the nearest public libraries are 10 miles away (or further) and fairly small as well. Checking those books out from those libraries is often not feasible, as the titles are already checked out or not available at all. Having great mentor texts on hand will allow us to teach our writing curriculum much more effectively and give our students a chance to revisit them as often as they like or need.
